Wet morning jobs

Days are getting shorter. They are even dark throughout the hours of light. Morning jobs still need doing. In this blog, I’ll take you on a journey through the morning routine of caring for these graceful camelids, exploring the rituals that ensure the well-being and happiness of our beloved alpacas.

Checking eyes and jaws

The alpaca farm comes alive with the first light of day. As the sun paints the sky in hues of pink and gold, or grey, we are already at work, ready to embark on the morning routine that sets the tone for the day.

The day begins with a wholesome breakfast for our alpacas. A carefully crafted blend of high-quality hay and specially formulated alpaca feed is laid out in their feeding areas. Ensuring a nutritious start is crucial to their overall health and vitality.

After breakfast, it’s time for a visual health check. We carefully observe each alpaca while they eat, checking for any changing behaviours, and after it’s time for “cuddles”, we look out for signs of discomfort, injury, or illness. Early detection is key, and this daily routine allows us to address any health concerns promptly.

Grooming is not just about the alpacas’ luxurious fleece; it’s also a time for bonding. We spend quality time interacting with the alpacas, building trust and strengthening the human-animal connection. We also assess the quality of the fleece and other traits thinking of the show season next year.

After this, we let them out. They walk or run, some look for their mums, some just want to race and prance. And with the satisfaction of this view, we can get on with the rest of the day.

The morning routine on an alpaca farm is not just a series of tasks; it’s a symphony of care, connection, and dedication to the well-being of these remarkable animals. From the first rays of sunlight, each step in our routine contributes to the health, happiness, and harmony of our alpaca farm. As the day unfolds, I look forward to the continued joy of caring for these gentle creatures and sharing the magic of alpaca farming with all of you.
