So this is one of those sudden appearances in the field. There were four females in one of the paddocks. One of these things farmers do is counting heads constantly. We had tried to get Esme pregnant but she kept on sitting for the male (remember: once pregnant they spit the male off and don’t allow the mating) so we gave up, as it was getting late in the summer. After a whole year, she didn’t give birth or look pregnant. Two weeks of grace we gave her, and still no baby alpaca. So eventually she was moved with the empty females to a separate field. For two days we counted four heads each time. But then, from the house -maybe 150m up the hill- the boss counted five. Down he ran to find the little one already suckling. That’s how we found Grace.
In 2025, Grace gave us a beautiful modern grey male sired by LH. Montezuma we named Gabbro. We could see Grace was carrying. I’m sure we can see it also this year. One or two weeks until she delivers, I think. I hope she holds until the next sunny spell.
The male we chose for Grace last year was Capital Texugo – mid rose grey. I am going to say we’re getting another grey from Grace, I’m going to wish for a female. What do you think?
